The Dark Knight: The JokeReview

We went to see the Dark Knight last Saturday. Yeah, I know, a bit late than the rest of the world, but still, watched it we did. It was an enjoyable flick. Nolan interpretation of the Bat-verse totally revived the franchise (if Batman Begins did't already do that). If you haven't already watched the film, I'd suggest that you skip reading this post.

nice CGI work on the trademark facial disfigurement of TwoFace
this was a leaked image before the movie came out, so,
you have to see the post-production version
of the above concept in the movie

Eckhart portrayed a disillusioned view of law and disorder as TwoFace. Bale strikes a subtle balance as Wayne/Batman, while Ledger deserves a standing ovation for his manic facial tick and diabolical personification of the Bat's arch nemesis, the Joker.

two words: Creepy Cool!

To quote a brief 3 worded review from a fellow friend; “Joker outshone Batman.”

new suit, same old lispy voice.
OoOooh, watch out for the
Bat's Fighting Style..

fair compensation.

On one end, we have Bale – the GOOD guy that's almost BAD (READ: kayu!), on another, we have Ledger, a BAD guy that's too GOOD (posthumous Oscar nominations?) and in the middle we saw Eckhart - perhaps this year's most disturbing onscreen-fall-from-grace.

Alfie, God and Sirius Black
they didn't hired a bunch of nobodies now did they?

The physical transformation of Gotham's knight in shining armor Dent to judge-executioner Twoface, really sets the symbolism for the Bat's emotional transformation from unabashedly hopeful to somewhat stoic despair, hence the moniker of The Dark Knight – setting a stage for a much darker installation in the Batman franchise. While Joker...well, let's just say, the movie can be aptly named Batman:The Killing Joke to follow the comic titular adaptation.

yes yes Ledger, the critics are applauding as well

A solid story supported by commendable casts, pushed Nolan's vision of the Bat-verse to another dimension. Long gone are the days when Batman had rubber nipples and typecast villains made campy in-jokes understood only by fanboys. This movie, this... beast is truly a visual feast that tugs you viscerally and leaves you wanting for more. In a good way, of course.

hehe..moments we want to forget
but i kinda liked its cheesiness

So far, TDK is the only superhero movie this summer that did not try to overplay on the emotional issues. Ok ok..there was a smoochscene or two, but it was scripted in totally non-stimulating moments that moves the story forward. The only gripe I had with the movie was Batman's irritating vanishing and re-appearing act. Yes yes, you are THE Dark Knight. The shadow is your friend. We got it! Jeez..

The Bat after mystically appearing from out of nowhere
(snigger)

TDK is truly the level that of which other comic-superhero-movie-adaptations should aspire to. It's sheer awesomeness transcends mere mortals' understanding of the Bat's awesomeness (to parody this). In a nutshell, go see it. NOW. If it's still not fully booked that is.

let me put a smile on that face..

Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Season 2

Red Alert 3: Trailer & Teaser

After the events of Red Alert 2 the leadership of the doomed Soviet Union devises a plan to travel back in time and assassinate Albert Einstein (whose own time travels led to the events of the previous two games) in order to change history and restore the Soviet Union as a world power. However, during the mission, something goes quickly and horribly wrong and an alternate timeline is inadvertently created, which alters the technological evolution and creates a new, technologically advanced superpower in the East, known as the Empire of the Rising Sun. And thus, World War III breaks out among the Soviets, the Allies and the Empire and is fought with exotic weaponry such as "Tesla coils, heavily armed War Blimps, teleportation, armored bears, intelligent dolphins, floating island fortresses, and transforming tanks".

In the Red Alert games, it is asserted that Adolf Hitler was prevented from rising to power, which prevented Nazi Germany from forming and prevented World War II as we know from taking place (Joseph Stalin is the main aggressor against Europe in that timeline).

Artists Grow Photos For Wimbledon

For this years Wimbledon Tennis Championship, HSBC commissioned artists Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey to create a series of large photographs using one of their favorite mediums, grass. The pair started by photographing three people prior to the event; Tara Moore who competed in the qualifying tournament, Eddie Seaward the 15 year veteran groundsman at Wimbledon, and Coach Lizzie May who guides the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative.

Back in the studio the artists develop the photos in a very similar way to printing in a darkroom. Large panels are seeded with grass and the images are projected on to them as negatives. The areas that get more light allow the grass to produce more chlorophyll and darken. It took about a week for projecting the image for 12 hours a day to complete the Wimbledon work.

The pair actually discovered this technique by accident. A few years back they were installing an indoor wall of grass in a gallery and left a ladder leaning against it. When they later moved it, a faint outline of the ladder appeared. The artists then began to experiment with projecting images onto grass with a slide projector. Once the panels are exposed to sunlight or bring interior lights thought they begin to fade. They have developed light control techniques to lengthen the effect in gallery spaces.
